The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous suspension bridges that connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County.
One thing, as I wish I have walk on the bridge. as my guide , Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed on the walkway only during daylight hours.
I just have viewed the bridge from both ends and driven across the bridge,
I hope that someday I would need a reason to come back. just for walk and walk .....around the bridge.
here's info about the bridge
The bridge is 1.7 miles in length and was opened in 1937. It is by far the most famous bridge in the United States. There has been a song written about it and paintings made of i..
Originally the orange color of the Golden Gate was a sealant that was applied, and was never actually intended to be The Golden Gate’s permanent color. Once people saw the color of the bridge they persuaded the authorities to allow it to remain that color. they were able to talk the bridge planners into leaving the orange color. That’s one of the many things that makes the Golden Gate Bridge so unique.
Prior to the Golden Gate being built, the only short route to Marin county was by ferry boat. At that time you could take an automobile on the ferry from the Hyde Street Pier to Sausalito which was about a 20 minute ride. Now you can still take ferry rides, but the ferries only transport people and bicycles. In fact the ferry business has become quite a tourist attraction. Commuters also use the ferry system. .
One rather grim use of the Golden Gate Bridge is by people wanting to commit suicide. Unfortunately there is nothing to stop a person from jumping from the bridge. In the last few years there appears to have been over 30 people a year who chose the Golden Gate as a place to end their lives. More than 1,300 people have jumped from the bridge since its construction. This is just an estimate because many times a person can jump from the bridge unseen, and their body might never be discovered. Very few people survive the fall.
If you drive across the bridge, there is a toll that applies. Pedestrians and cyclists can go on the bridge walkways during certain hours and are allowed onto the bridge at no charge.
